5 Ways to Live in the Moment

Living in the moment can be hard to do. Sometimes it’s hard to forget about the past and to stop worrying about the future. However, living in the now is a great way to relieve stress and live both a happier and healthier life. Emily Dickinson said that "forever is composed of nows." Here are a few suggestions for savoring each moment from the Village at Proprietors Green, a senior living community, including Allerton House assisted living community at Proprietors Green, near Boston, MA.

1. Avoid multitasking. It’s difficult to enjoy the beauty of each task you perform if you are not giving your full attention to each activity you are doing. Complete tasks separately and do not perform a new one until you have fully completed the last one. This will improve the quality of your work and make performing your tasks less stressful. Try it and see for yourself.

2. Attempt something new. Learn a new computer program or how to play a musical instrument. Try a new exercise class or learn a new language. It doesn’t matter what you are trying, only that you are trying something new. Learning a new task is a great way to keep your mind from wandering off. Learning new skills will help you focus on the here and now. It is also a great way to stimulate your mind and stay mentally sharp and active.

3. Lose the to-do list. It’s amazing how much time you can waste making up to-do lists and checking off your tasks. It’s also a great way to create stress in your life. Try not to stress about all of the things you have to do today, tomorrow or next week. Focus on what you are doing now. Enjoy the tasks you are completing now. You may never accomplish all of the things on your to-do list. That is okay. Life is not about completing lists and checking off tasks, but about enjoying the moments you are given. Eliminate your list and eliminate a bit of stress.

4. Take a break. Take a pause. Try meditation, yoga, or prayer. Take a moment for you and just pause your life for a few minutes. Whatever works best for you, just take a few deep breaths before starting a new task. This is a great way to reduce stress, feel happier and healthier, and live in the moment.

5. Get inspired. Look for inspiration around you. Live in the moment and you are sure to find plenty of small things around you that are beautiful and inspiring.
